Noel Hennessey, Continuous Improvement Director, Lake Region Medical In January 2001 after working over twenty years as production supervisor in the electronic industry Noel joined Lake Region Medical Limited as Production Manager. Noel was a key player when, two years later, lean was first introduced into the company through a number of kaizen events. The success of these kaizen events coupled with the fact that he had been converted to a lean zealot led to Noel's responsibilities expanding to include C.I.

This involved running monthly kaizen events throughout the plant to identify & remove waste. As the company continued to grow, in 2005 Noel was promoted to the role of Continuous Improvement Director & successfully undertook the MSc in Lean Operations through Cardiff University. This, along with various benchmarking ventures which included trips to the USA & Japan enabled Lake Region to broaden their C.I. strategy to include, TPM, VSM, TWI, Standard Work, 8 Step Problem Solving etc. Noel continues to be very passionate about lean and recognizes that lean is a major weapon in the battle to keep manufacturing jobs in Ireland.

Nicola Merrigan, Lean Engineer Nicola started working with Lake Region Medical Limited in 1999 as a production operator.  From there she advanced through several positions as trainer, team leader and supervisor.  During her time as supervisor, in 2003, she took part in an initial lean pilot project within her production area.  Following huge success in this, she took on personal responsibility for continuous improvement within her area. She subsequently completed many successful projects introducing synchronization and flow, thus enabling the formation of the company’s first value stream.  Given her enthusiasm for lean and her strong inter-personal skills, it was decided that Nicola would be ideally suited to ‘spread the word’ and so she was seconded to the continuous improvement group in 2005.  She has since successfully completed the MSc in Lean Operations through Cardiff University and continues to play a key role in Lake Region’s improvement strategy.
